Drink Some Water!

“Don’t forget to drink some water!”

If you’re like me, you’ve heard this phrase many times in your life.

Have a headache? Drink some water.

Have a stomachache? Drink some water.

Hot day? Cold day? Water.

Hungry? Tired? Surely a glass of water would help.

Exercising? Coughing? Hiccupping? You guessed it – water!

Water is essential for every function in our human body, and for every living thing in the world. Without it, life as we know it would simply cease to exist.

There is another type of water that we can’t live without. John 4 depicts a beautiful encounter between a woman who needed some water, and the Messiah who gave her so much more.

“Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:6-7)

Now, I’ve never been to Jacob’s well at noon, but I have lived in Pennsylvania during a July heatwave. Though it may not be exactly the same, I can begin to understand how hot it may have felt that afternoon. After a long journey in that heat, I would have been ready for some water, too!

But Jesus came to this well for a far deeper reason than to simply quench his thirst. He had the woman’s eternity on his mind:

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’

The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’

He told her, ‘Go, call your husband and come back.’

‘I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true…’

…The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah’ (called Christ) ‘is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.’

Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the one speaking to you—I am he.’  (John 4:13-18, 25-26)

This woman had a complicated past and a shameful present. She had tried many different wells, yet she always came up dry and empty. But today, she wasn’t just coming to a well, she was coming to the Well.

Nothing quenches the body like water, and nothing quenches the soul like Jesus.

Don’t forget to fill up on Living Water!

Anxious mind? Fill up on Living Water.

Broken heart? Living Water.

Bad day? Good day? Living Water.

Busy? Tired? His water can help.

Working? Resting? Breathing? You guessed it – Living Water!

So today, as you fill up your water bottle on this hot summer day, don’t forget to fill up on Living Water, too.

He is our Source, our Supply, and our Savior. We can’t live without him.
